Record Name | Boxer Peacock's wash basin |
Record Description | I am grateful to Mike Walton for this information:
This fine salt glazed stoneware drinking fountain located by the track from Fremington to Castle Farm was set up by Boxer Peacock who was the final occupant of the picturesque but now sadly, ruined white-washed cottage known as Boxer Peacock's Cottage. This drinking fountain and hand basin was undoubtedly, then, top of the range and very 'in'. The basin was set up to receive the clean cool water (never known to freeze) from the small spring stream closest to his cottage. As stated by The Major, Boxer Peacock had also set up his shaving mirror in the branches of an overhanging hazel tree. Those were the days, when Swaledale men shaved every morning at 6 o'clock sharp and ensuite really meant a 300 yard walk to the nearest wash basin.
