Geology | Galcial erratic originating from Namurian Chert strata above the Main Limestone |
Record Name | Zoophycos, a trace fossil from the Black Band Chert above the Main Limestone |
Record Description | This fossil is interpreted as the signsture effect marking of the calcareous ooze of a shallow tropical sea during Late Carboniferous Time by the fronds of a ?plant or soft coral organism waving from side to side in tidal currents. Whether this is a n accurate decription of the nature of this fossil is a matter of some doubt as this example seems to include carbon which could imply that the fossil was itself a living organism and not the trace of a mark on the tidal ooze. |
