Additional Notes This well vegetated cliff is one of several high elevation limestone cliffs in Swaledale each with a uniquely different relict limestone ashwood woodland community. This cliff is distinctive in having a fine and well developed field layer but with a restricted number of tree species, for example wych elm, ash, blackthorn, hawthorn, juniper and aspen are all absent. This cannot be explained by exposure, Long Scar is comparatively sheltered, alone since all the above tree species are present at Oxnop Scar which is also at 500mOD,facing due west and highly exposed.
