Record Name | SWAAG in Eden. Part Two. Greystoke. Standing Stone by the B5288 road. |
Record Description | This standing stone was noticed in pasture close by the roadside on our drive from Penrith to Mungrisedale to meet up to walk on Carrock Fell. A long cairn is nearby (not seen).
The impressive standing stone is a glacial erratic of volcanic ash (Borrowdale Volcanic series)and is the sole survivor of what surely was originally a complex of megalithic stones.
There are several stones of megalithic proportions in the adjacent hedgerow and a pair of standing stones in the roadside hedge which smay be a remnant of a stone avenue.
It is worth noting that the standing stone is located at the point where Carrock Fell(our planned destination) with its ?Neolithic enclosure and contained stone cairn first becomes visible as an isolated peak on the western horizon. |
