| Record Description | This fine wych elm is a survivor. It grows on a relict hedgerow with the remains of several other mature elms, all now dead.
This, an ancient coppice which has thrown up three fine cojoined trees, is one of the finest trees in Swaledale and is a significant tree in one of the most photographed landscapes of Swaledale- the Gunnerside fields and barns.

| Additional Notes | The risk to elm trees from dutch elm bark beetle remains ever present and each year one or two surviving mature elms succumb to the deadly threat.It is a salutary thought that our grandchildren may not ever see a fully mature wych elm in their landscape.
A very few elms, such as this tree hopefully, may possess natural resistence to the elm bark fungus. These trees should be treasured and perhaps provide seed or cuttings so that the genetic qualities of resistent trees can be preserved. |
