Record Name | Some specimen trees in Swaledale and Arkengarthdale. The Fell End Yew. |
Record Description | This yew, in this wild setting, must be one of the finest wild specimens to be seen anywhere in Britain. It has several large trunks each rising from a very large common root bole which is today unseen, buried under limestone scree. The total girth of this multi stem yew tree at ground level but at about 1.0m above the root bole, is 6.0m.
It is female and produces a large crop of red arils (the fruit)which are devoured by flocks of field fares. |

Other trees on the sheer face and top edge of Fell End Scar include further fine cliff edge yews, a solitary juniper bush (in poor health when last seen and now probably dead, a large gooseberry bush-the highest in Yorkshire! |
