A great start to Hagg Dig 2017
SWAAG members and volunteers gathered on a drizzly hillside in Swaledale yesterday for the start of this year's dig on The Hagg. Yesterday members had set up the site complete with tools, catering supplies and two tents. The site was marked out including the climb up the steep hillside from the car park below. After a morning briefing from project leader Philip and professional archaeologist Tony, the morning was spent removing turf and piling it up into a series of Antonine Walls.
After a damp lunch break the clouds parted and volunteers were given an opportunity to start trowelling. Finds for the day included two sherds of Samian and (?) black burnished ware, some horse shoes and a very abraded George III penny. The Hagg 2017 t-shirt as modelled here by Rob, is available now for just £10 from Shirley.
