Yesterday we were delighted to welcome the first of our children's groups, the local Young Archaeologists Club, to our site in Swaledale. They enjoyed a site tour with Philip, looking especially at the newly-exposed archaeology at the top of the hill. There are signs here of a structure with what may be a threshold, inlaid with decorative white crinoidal limestone. This building, if that's what it was, enjoys panoramic views up the Dale and keeps watch over the spring line under Fremington Edge, which may have been the source of water for the site.
The YACs then enjoyed a series of activities, looking at a variety of finds, role-playing Roman invaders confronting local Iron-Age farmers for the first time, and a bartering game with authentic food items.
Many thanks to Philip, Dave, Rob, Shirley and amazing food historian, Jane Sammells, for their time and expertise which made the event so special. Sue Nicholson |
